~ My knife "journey" started when
I had to replace a handle on an old kitchen knife. While reading
up on how to do that, I happened upon some websites showing
extraordinary custom made knives. And my journey began.
I do not have the facility to forge the
metal blade, so I buy full tang blade blanks from a supplier. I design
and make the handles. The blades that I buy are High Carbon Stainless
steel (440C Stainless). It is a good high quality stainless steel
especially for cutting instruments.
After making a couple of knives, I planned to
buy leather sheaths for them...but could not find any quality made ones
for reasonable prices. So, the second part of my "journey"
involved learning how to do the leatherwork required to make my own
sheaths. Some sheaths were made from an old pair of Cowboy Chaps !
The Chaps leather is fairly soft and has a nice "distressed" look.
Other sheaths are made from new vegetable tanned cowhide (7 Oz.).
The sheaths are hand sewn using a saddle stitch and waxed linen cord.
I also "wet form" the sheaths to the specific knife it was made for.
~ It's been a great Journey so far ~
